This factsheet provides a short summary of the potential climate change impacts on Australia's marine biodiversity and resources. Regional climate influences on marine diversity is strongly driven by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with ocean warming and cooling impacting the distribution and migration of different species. Australia’s marine environment is at risk from changes to ocean temperature, salinity, sea level, mixed layer depth, circulation, pH, and from changes in atmospheric radiation and climatic extreme events. Impacts will be dependant on the physical tolerances of individual species. The changes in marine diversity will have implications for fishing industries and tourism - with an expectation that there will be both winners and losers. Adaptation will require flexibility in industry practices and policy responses, with opportunities to take advantage of some chanes. The factsheet also describes research priortities and the work of the then Marine Adaptation Network.
