Suburban Neighbourhood Adaptation for a Changing Climate (SNACC)

This report presents findings from the Suburban Neighbourhood Adaptation for a Changing Climate (SNACC) research project. The project aimed to answer the questions: • How can existing suburban neighbourhoods in England be ‘best’ adapted to reduce further impacts of climate change and withstand ongoing changes? and; • What are the processes that bring about climate change motivated adaptation in suburban areas? Specifically: what might motivate residents and other stakeholders to adapt to present and future climate threats?

SURF, TURF and CURF: A Sustainable Regional Future

"Professor Barbara Norman of the Canberra Urban and Regional Futures (CURF) Program gives this talk at The Australian National University on 1 August 2011. A new national urban policy, climate change, regional development and sustainable population statements dominated the 2011 federal budget. All will have an impact on the future shape and design of our cities and regions. On the ground, managing urban growth in the context of sustainability and climate change is also requiring more innovative responses that transcend traditional boundaries.

Assessing resilient urban systems to support long term adaptation to climate change

Cities and Climate Change: Global Report on Human Settlements

Cities and Climate Change reviews the linkages between urbanization and climate change, two of the greatest challenges currently facing humanity in the 21st Century, and whose effects are converging in dangerous ways. It illustrates the significant contribution of urban areas to climate change while at the same time highlighting the potentially devastating effects of climate change on urban populations. It reviews policy responses, strategies and practices that are emerging in urban areas to mitigate and adapt to climate change, as well as their potential achievements and constraints.

Climate Change and the Built Environment: A European Union Perspective

These slides from the recent Montreal Planning for Climate Change Conference outline the steps that the European Union are taking in the field of adaptation and mitigation.

Adaptations to Sustain High‐Quality Freshwater Supplies in Response to Climate Change

This report provides a useful overview of how climate change may impact on the water quality and quantity for human settlements. The author argues that in order to be resilient there needs to be "improved communication, low‐interest loans, and pricing mechanisms for different water uses". The paper also explores the potential risks from "surprise" events. This report provides a range of strategic policy responses.
