Canberra's Integrated Urban Waterways Project

Drivers for Adaptation Action
Changes to rainfall regimes and river flows. Design ponds to slow storm water flow through the suburbs into Canberra's lakes, with improved benefits for water quality & biodiversity. Advance the National Water Initiative objectives of encouraging water reuse and innovation and capacity building to create water sensitive cities.
Outcomes Achieved

The project has:

  • developed urban water management plans;
  • demonstrated techniques for achieving Water Sensitive Urban Design in established urban areas;
  • contributed to the health of the Murrumbidgee River by reducing solids, nitrogen and phosphorus loads;
  • constructed the Flemington Ponds as a component of the stormwater management system for North Canberra.
