Interdisciplinary research is frequently presented as a valuable approach for dealing with complex problems like adapting to climate change and enhancing rural resilience. Yet, in practice it poses many under-recognised challenges. This presentation will discuss how the demands of climate change adaptation not only highlight the importance of, but the difficulties with, interdisciplinarity. Drawing on rural examples and recent empirical work into researchers’ experiences of participating in interdisciplinary collaborative research, it will explore some key characteristics of interdisciplinarity and climate change adaptation and will outline the implications of their intersection.
