July 6, 2010: 'Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research at the UK Met Office Hadley Centre, Diogo De Gusmao, Hazel Thornton, UK Met Office
The Queensland Climate Change Centre of Excellence and NCCARF presented "Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research at the UK Met Office Hadley Centre' with special guests Hazel Thornton and Diogo de Gusmao, senior scientists, Hadley Centre, UK on Tuesday 6 July, 2010 at Griffith University QCA Theatre, Brisbane.
About the speakers:
Mr Diogo de Gusmao
Diogo joined the Hadley Centre as a senior climate consultant following an earlier career in flood risk management with the UK Environment Agency. He was awarded the national climate change hero award by the EA for being the first person to map sea-level rise for the UK and proceeded to establish a visualization technique to show sea-level rise as a hazard at a global level. Diogo will cover the methodology used by the Hadley Centre in calculating sea-level changes around the world and show examples of the Met Office Relative Sea Level change model (MORSE). Diogo will discuss current ‘blind spots’ in sealevel science and how the Hadley Centre is dealing with these.
Dr Hazel Thornton
Hazel joined the Met Office in 2002 following atmospheric and environmental studies in Paris and Norwich, UK. Her background is in data assimilation for weather forecasting and she has a strong background in meteorological science. In the past four years, Hazel has concentrated on tailoring the climate science within the Hadley Centre to government and industry customer needs with respect to climate adaptation. She will speak in the broader areas of research this Centre conducts across water, agriculture, energy, transport and health and describe some of the projects they are undertaking in these areas.
