Daniel's listings

Dr Daniel Stock is a Research Fellow in NCCARF. He collects and lists recent news and publications relevant to climate change adaptation, sometimes with short comments. This is intended as a resource for NCCARF staff, but we share it here as a contribution to community knowledge.
  • Discussion: Developing a taste for Sagrantino: climate change and Australia’s wine industry

"As the climate gets warmer, growing conditions and ripening times of crops will be affected. This raises all kinds of challenges for food security, but as we hit the festive season you may also be wondering what it will do to your wine."

  • Project Website Framing multi-level and multi-actor adaptation responses in the Victorian context.

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

The project 'Framing multi-level and multi-actor adaptation responses in the Victorian context', is an 18 month project which aims to develop and test an operational framing of adaptation which will act as a decision-making ‘roadmap’ to better inform adaptation policy and practice by Victorian authorities at the local and regional levels. To achieve this, the project is structured according to four discrete work packages: WP1 – an overarching framework for adaptation (the ‘roadmap’), WP2 – preliminary economic analysis of climate change impacts, WP3 – framework development in selected case studies, WP4 – exploring local narratives.

  • Book Resilient Cities: Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change - Proceedings of the Global Forum 2010 (Local Sustainability)

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

"This book has its origins in a collection of papers originally presented at the Resilient Cities 2010 Congress in Bonn, Germany (May 2010), the first global forum on cities and adaptation to climate change, convened by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. In this volume, the first in a new series dedicated to this annual event, a range of contributors bring their perspectives to bear on the most pressing issues and controversies surrounding adaptation to climate change within cities."

  • Journal Article Mediated climate change in Britain: Scepticism on the web and on television around Copenhagen

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

This article in press in the Global Environmental Change journal, discusses that "Copenhagen 2009 was a major moment in the development of climate change as an issue. But climate sceptics before and during this event, sought to influence the nature of debate, and for this reason, the way Copenhagen was covered in the mass media was particularly important. This paper outlines the contours of contrarian arguments and claims, and assesses their reflection in the coverage at Copenhagen."

  • Journal Article A systematic review of observed climate change adaptation in developed nations

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

This paper in Climatic Change Volume 106, Number 2, 327-336 discusses how "We develop and apply a systematic mixed-methods literature review methodology to identify and characterize how climate change adaptation is taking place in developed nations. We find limited evidence of adaptation action. Where interventions are being implemented and reported on, they are typically in sectors that are sensitive to climate impacts, are most common at the municipal level, facilitated by higher-level government interventions, with responses typically institutional in nature."

  • DVD (free) Sustainable Land Management Technologies for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

These mini-films, of 5-7 minutes each, show two sustainable land management (SLM) technologies that have a proven track record in Africa: Stone Lines and Fanya Juu. The technologies presented can constitute important components within the climate change adaptation strategies of small-scale farmers. Included with the DVD are information cards which provide a summary of each technology - including their range of suitably, input requirements and design specifications, as well as references for further reading. If you would like a free copy of this DVD please email: newbooks@iied.org

  • Journal Article A Method for Building Community Resilience to Climate Change in Emerging Coastal Cities

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

This article in press in the Futures journal, discusses that "building resilience to climate change within sea change communities requires a new approach to science. The authors argue the need for a new method to be built on social foresight models in order to work towards an envisioned sustainable future. The authors discuss the key dimensions of this approach through: (i) the sea change phenomenon; (ii) the key characteristics of climate change; (iii) comparison of social foresight models; and (iv) a new research approach.

  • Report Risk Assessment of Climate Adaptation Strategies for Extreme Wind Events in Queensland (Stewart MG, Wang X. 2011. Risk Assessment of Climate Adaptation Strategies for Extreme Wind Events in Queensland. CSIRO. Australia. 84 pp.)

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

This report from CSIRO discusses that "A changing climate and higher wind speeds means that residential constructions are likely to receive more damage in the future if design standards are maintained at the current level. On the basis of the latest research in effects of climate change on tropical cyclones, we considered wind climate scenarios ranging from no change to moderate change to significant change. Results are presented for the various wind change scenarios to 2100 for four cities in Queensland: Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton and Brisbane."

  • Youtube Video America's Climate Choices: Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

This video discusses the Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change book which "calls for a national adaptation strategy that provides needed technical and scientific resources, incentives to begin adaptation planning, guidance across jurisdictions, shared lessons learned, and support of scientific research to expand knowledge of impacts and adaptation" This title is part of the America's Climate Choices project of the National Research Council of the National Academise (USA)

The book can be purchased here

  • Journal Article Towards climate adaptation and coastal governance in Ireland: Integrated architecture for effective management?

    Date Added:
    27-May-2011

This paper in Marine Policy Volume 35, Issue 6, December 2011, Pages 784-793 discusses that "Coastal communities worldwide have turned to integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) as a process to deliver sustainable development. This paper explores how experience gained from ICZM implementation can be harnessed to inform the development and implementation of climate adaptation policies, with a particular focus on the coastal zone. Using the principles and conceptual basis of Earth System Governance – an emerging approach to analyse complexity of governance under global environmental change – the paper maps the architecture of ICZM and climate governance in Ireland."
